1  And there was¹⁹⁶¹ a famine⁷⁴⁵⁸ in the land,⁷⁷⁶ beside^{4480 905} the first⁷²²³ famine⁷⁴⁵⁸ that⁸³⁴ was¹⁹⁶¹ in the days³¹¹⁷ of Abraham.⁸⁵ And Isaac³³²⁷ went¹⁹⁸⁰ unto⁴¹³ Abimelech⁴⁰ king⁴⁴²⁸ of the Philistines⁶⁴³⁰ unto Gerar.¹⁶⁴²

2  And the LORD³⁰⁶⁸ appeared⁷²⁰⁰ unto⁴¹³ him, and said,⁵⁵⁹ Go not down^{3381 408} into Egypt;⁴⁷¹⁴ dwell⁷⁹³¹ in the land⁷⁷⁶ which⁸³⁴ I shall tell⁵⁵⁹ thee of:⁴¹³

3  Sojourn¹⁴⁸¹ in this²⁰⁶³ land,⁷⁷⁶ and I will be¹⁹⁶¹ with⁵⁹⁷³ thee, and will bless¹²⁸⁸ thee; for³⁵⁸⁸ unto thee, and unto thy seed,²²³³ I will give^{5414 853} all³⁶⁰⁵ these⁴¹¹ countries,⁷⁷⁶ and I will perform^{6965 853} the oath⁷⁶²¹ which⁸³⁴ I swore⁷⁶⁵⁰ unto Abraham⁸⁵ thy father;¹

4  And I will make ⁸⁵³ thy seed²²³³ to multiply⁷²³⁵ as the stars³⁵⁵⁶ of heaven,⁸⁰⁶⁴ and will give⁵⁴¹⁴ unto thy seed^{2233 853} all³⁶⁰⁵ these⁴¹¹ countries;⁷⁷⁶ and in thy seed²²³³ shall all³⁶⁰⁵ the nations¹⁴⁷¹ of the earth⁷⁷⁶ be blessed;¹²⁸⁸

5  Because⁶¹¹⁸ that⁸³⁴ Abraham⁸⁵ obeyed⁸⁰⁸⁵ my voice,⁶⁹⁶³ and kept⁸¹⁰⁴ my charge,⁴⁹³¹ my commandments,⁴⁶⁸⁷ my statutes,²⁷⁰⁸ and my laws.⁸⁴⁵¹

6  And Isaac³³²⁷ dwelt³⁴²⁷ in Gerar:¹⁶⁴²

7  And the men³⁷⁶ of the place⁴⁷²⁵ asked⁷⁵⁹² him of his wife;⁸⁰² and he said,⁵⁵⁹ She¹⁹³¹ is my sister:²⁶⁹ for³⁵⁸⁸ he feared³³⁷² to say,⁵⁵⁹ She is my wife;⁸⁰² lest,⁶⁴³⁵ said he, the men³⁷⁶ of the place⁴⁷²⁵ should kill²⁰²⁶ me for⁵⁹²¹ Rebekah;⁷²⁵⁹ because³⁵⁸⁸ she¹⁹³¹ was fair²⁸⁹⁶ to look upon.⁴⁷⁵⁸

8  And it came to pass,¹⁹⁶¹ when³⁵⁸⁸ he had been there⁸⁰³³ a long⁷⁴⁸ time,³¹¹⁷ that Abimelech⁴⁰ king⁴⁴²⁸ of the Philistines⁶⁴³⁰ looked out⁸²⁵⁹ at¹¹⁵⁷ a window,²⁴⁷⁴ and saw,⁷²⁰⁰ and, behold,²⁰⁰⁹ Isaac³³²⁷ was sporting⁶⁷¹¹ with ⁸⁵³ Rebekah⁷²⁵⁹ his wife.⁸⁰²

9  And Abimelech⁴⁰ called⁷¹²¹ Isaac,³³²⁷ and said,⁵⁵⁹ Behold,²⁰⁰⁹ of a surety³⁸⁹ she¹⁹³¹ is thy wife:⁸⁰² and how³⁴⁹ saidst⁵⁵⁹ thou, She¹⁹³¹ is my sister?²⁶⁹ And Isaac³³²⁷ said⁵⁵⁹ unto⁴¹³ him, Because³⁵⁸⁸ I said,⁵⁵⁹ Lest⁶⁴³⁵ I die⁴¹⁹¹ for⁵⁹²¹ her.

10  And Abimelech⁴⁰ said,⁵⁵⁹ What⁴¹⁰⁰ is this²⁰⁶³ thou hast done⁶²¹³ unto us? one²⁵⁹ of the people⁵⁹⁷¹ might lightly⁴⁵⁹² have lain⁷⁹⁰¹ with⁸⁵⁴ thy wife,⁸⁰² and thou shouldest have brought⁹³⁵ guiltiness⁸¹⁷ upon⁵⁹²¹ us.

11  And Abimelech⁴⁰ charged^{6680 853} all³⁶⁰⁵ his people,⁵⁹⁷¹ saying,⁵⁵⁹ He that toucheth⁵⁰⁶⁰ this²⁰⁸⁸ man³⁷⁶ or his wife⁸⁰² shall surely be put to death.^{4191 4191}

12  Then Isaac³³²⁷ sowed²²³² in that¹⁹³¹ land,⁷⁷⁶ and received⁴⁶⁷² in the same¹⁹³¹ year⁸¹⁴¹ a hundredfold:^{3967 8180} and the LORD³⁰⁶⁸ blessed¹²⁸⁸ him.

13  And the man³⁷⁶ waxed great,¹⁴³¹ and went¹⁹⁸⁰ forward,¹⁹⁸⁰ and grew¹⁴³² until^{5704 3588} he became very great:^{1431 3966}

14  For he had¹⁹⁶¹ possession⁴⁷³⁵ of flocks,⁶⁶²⁹ and possession⁴⁷³⁵ of herds,¹²⁴¹ and great store⁷²²⁷ of servants:⁵⁶⁵⁷ and the Philistines⁶⁴³⁰ envied⁷⁰⁶⁵ him.

15  For all³⁶⁰⁵ the wells⁸⁷⁵ which⁸³⁴ his father's¹ servants⁵⁶⁵⁰ had digged²⁶⁵⁸ in the days³¹¹⁷ of Abraham⁸⁵ his father,¹ the Philistines⁶⁴³⁰ had stopped⁵⁶⁴⁰ them, and filled⁴³⁹⁰ them with earth.⁶⁰⁸³

16  And Abimelech⁴⁰ said⁵⁵⁹ unto⁴¹³ Isaac,³³²⁷ Go¹⁹⁸⁰ from^{4480 5973} us; for³⁵⁸⁸ thou art much mightier^{6105 3966} than⁴⁴⁸⁰ we.

17  And Isaac³³²⁷ departed¹⁹⁸⁰ thence,^{4480 8033} and pitched his tent²⁵⁸³ in the valley⁵¹⁵⁸ of Gerar,¹⁶⁴² and dwelt³⁴²⁷ there.⁸⁰³³

18  And Isaac³³²⁷ digged²⁶⁵⁸ again^{7725 853} the wells⁸⁷⁵ of water,⁴³²⁵ which⁸³⁴ they had digged²⁶⁵⁸ in the days³¹¹⁷ of Abraham⁸⁵ his father;¹ for the Philistines⁶⁴³⁰ had stopped⁵⁶⁴⁰ them after³¹⁰ the death⁴¹⁹⁴ of Abraham:⁸⁵ and he called⁷¹²¹ their names⁸⁰³⁴ after the names⁸⁰³⁴ by which⁸³⁴ his father¹ had called⁷¹²¹ them.

19  And Isaac's³³²⁷ servants⁵⁶⁵⁰ digged²⁶⁵⁸ in the valley,⁵¹⁵⁸ and found⁴⁶⁷² there⁸⁰³³ a well⁸⁷⁵ of springing²⁴¹⁶ water.⁴³²⁵

20  And the herdsmen⁷⁴⁶² of Gerar¹⁶⁴² did strive⁷³⁷⁸ with⁵⁹⁷³ Isaac's³³²⁷ herdsmen,⁷⁴⁶² saying,⁵⁵⁹ The water⁴³²⁵ is ours: and he called⁷¹²¹ the name⁸⁰³⁴ of the well⁸⁷⁵ Esek;⁶²³⁰ because³⁵⁸⁸ they strove⁶²²⁹ with⁵⁹⁷³ him.

21  And they digged²⁶⁵⁸ another³¹² well,⁸⁷⁵ and strove⁷³⁷⁸ for⁵⁹²¹ that also:¹⁵⁷¹ and he called⁷¹²¹ the name⁸⁰³⁴ of it Sitnah.⁷⁸⁵⁶

22  And he removed⁶²⁷⁵ from thence,^{4480 8033} and digged²⁶⁵⁸ another³¹² well;⁸⁷⁵ and for⁵⁹²¹ that they strove⁷³⁷⁸ not:³⁸⁰⁸ and he called⁷¹²¹ the name⁸⁰³⁴ of it Rehoboth;⁷³⁴⁴ and he said,⁵⁵⁹ For³⁵⁸⁸ now⁶²⁵⁸ the LORD³⁰⁶⁸ hath made room⁷³³⁷ for us, and we shall be fruitful⁶⁵⁰⁹ in the land.⁷⁷⁶

23  And he went up⁵⁹²⁷ from thence^{4480 8033} to Beer-sheba.⁸⁸⁴

24  And the LORD³⁰⁶⁸ appeared⁷²⁰⁰ unto⁴¹³ him the same¹⁹³¹ night,³⁹¹⁵ and said,⁵⁵⁹ I⁵⁹⁵ am the God⁴³⁰ of Abraham⁸⁵ thy father:¹ fear³³⁷² not,⁴⁰⁸ for³⁵⁸⁸ I⁵⁹⁵ am with⁸⁵⁴ thee, and will bless¹²⁸⁸ thee, and multiply^{7235 853} thy seed²²³³ for⁵⁶⁶⁸ my servant⁵⁶⁵⁰ Abraham's⁸⁵ sake.

25  And he built¹¹²⁹ an altar⁴¹⁹⁶ there,⁸⁰³³ and called⁷¹²¹ upon the name⁸⁰³⁴ of the LORD,³⁰⁶⁸ and pitched⁵¹⁸⁶ his tent¹⁶⁸ there:⁸⁰³³ and there⁸⁰³³ Isaac's³³²⁷ servants⁵⁶⁵⁰ digged³⁷³⁸ a well.⁸⁷⁵

26  Then Abimelech⁴⁰ went¹⁹⁸⁰ to⁴¹³ him from Gerar,^{4480 1642} and Ahuzzath²⁷⁶ one of his friends,⁴⁸²⁸ and Phichol⁶³⁶⁹ the chief captain⁸²⁶⁹ of his army.⁶⁶³⁵

27  And Isaac³³²⁷ said⁵⁵⁹ unto⁴¹³ them, Wherefore⁴⁰⁶⁹ come⁹³⁵ ye to⁴¹³ me, seeing ye⁸⁵⁹ hate⁸¹³⁰ me, and have sent me away⁷⁹⁷¹ from⁴⁴⁸⁰ you?

28  And they said,⁵⁵⁹ We saw certainly^{7200 7200} that³⁵⁸⁸ the LORD³⁰⁶⁸ was¹⁹⁶¹ with⁵⁹⁷³ thee: and we said,⁵⁵⁹ Let there be¹⁹⁶¹ now⁴⁹⁹⁴ an oath⁴²³ between⁹⁹⁶ us, even between⁹⁹⁶ us and thee, and let us make³⁷⁷² a covenant¹²⁸⁵ with⁵⁹⁷³ thee;

29  That⁵¹⁸ thou wilt do⁶²¹³ us no hurt,⁷⁴⁵¹ as⁸³⁴ we have not³⁸⁰⁸ touched⁵⁰⁶⁰ thee, and as⁸³⁴ we have done⁶²¹³ unto⁵⁹⁷³ thee nothing but⁷⁵³⁵ good,²⁸⁹⁶ and have sent thee away⁷⁹⁷¹ in peace:⁷⁹⁶⁵ thou⁸⁵⁹ art now⁶²⁵⁸ the blessed¹²⁸⁸ of the LORD.³⁰⁶⁸

30  And he made⁶²¹³ them a feast,⁴⁹⁶⁰ and they did eat³⁹⁸ and drink.⁸³⁵⁴

31  And they rose up quickly⁷⁹²⁵ in the morning,¹²⁴² and swore⁷⁶⁵⁰ one³⁷⁶ to another:²⁵¹ and Isaac³³²⁷ sent them away,⁷⁹⁷¹ and they departed¹⁹⁸⁰ from^{4480 854} him in peace.⁷⁹⁶⁵

32  And it came to pass¹⁹⁶¹ the same¹⁹³¹ day,³¹¹⁷ that Isaac's³³²⁷ servants⁵⁶⁵⁰ came,⁹³⁵ and told⁵⁰⁴⁶ him concerning^{5921 182} the well⁸⁷⁵ which⁸³⁴ they had digged,²⁶⁵⁸ and said⁵⁵⁹ unto him, We have found⁴⁶⁷² water.⁴³²⁵

33  And he called⁷¹²¹ it Shebah:⁷⁶⁵⁶ therefore^{5921 3651} the name⁸⁰³⁴ of the city⁵⁸⁹² is Beer-sheba⁸⁸⁴ unto⁵⁷⁰⁴ this²⁰⁸⁸ day.³¹¹⁷

34  And Esau⁶²¹⁵ was¹⁹⁶¹ forty⁷⁰⁵ years⁸¹⁴¹ old¹¹²¹ when he took³⁹⁴⁷ to wife^{802 853} Judith³⁰⁶⁷ the daughter¹³²³ of Beeri⁸⁸² the Hittite,²⁸⁵⁰ and Bashemath¹³¹⁵ the daughter¹³²³ of Elon³⁵⁶ the Hittite:²⁸⁵⁰

35  Which were¹⁹⁶¹ a grief⁴⁷⁸⁶ of mind⁷³⁰⁷ unto Isaac³³²⁷ and to Rebekah.⁷²⁵⁹

1 ἐγένετο δὲ λιμὸς ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς χωρὶς τοῦ λιμοῦ τοῦ πρότερον ὃς ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ χρόνῳ τῷ Αβρααμ ἐπορεύθη δὲ Ισαακ πρὸς Αβιμελεχ βασιλέα Φυλιστιιμ εἰς Γεραρα

2 ὤφθη δὲ αὐτῷ κύριος καὶ εἶπεν μὴ καταβῇς εἰς Αἴγυπτον κατοίκησον δὲ ἐν τῇ γῇ ᾗ ἄν σοι εἴπω

3 καὶ παροίκει ἐν τῇ γῇ ταύτῃ καὶ ἔσομαι μετὰ σοῦ καὶ εὐλογήσω σε σοὶ γὰρ καὶ τῷ σπέρματί σου δώσω πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν ταύτην καὶ στήσω τὸν ὅρκον μου ὃν ὤμοσα Αβρααμ τῷ πατρί σου

4 καὶ πληθυνῶ τὸ σπέρμα σου ὡς τοὺς ἀστέρας τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καὶ δώσω τῷ σπέρματί σου πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν ταύτην καὶ ἐνευλογηθήσονται ἐν τῷ σπέρματί σου πάντα τὰ ἔθνη τῆς γῆς

5 ἀνθ᾽ ὧν ὑπήκουσεν Αβρααμ ὁ πατήρ σου τῆς ἐμῆς φωνῆς καὶ ἐφύλαξεν τὰ προστάγματά μου καὶ τὰς ἐντολάς μου καὶ τὰ δικαιώματά μου καὶ τὰ νόμιμά μου

6 καὶ κατῴκησεν Ισαακ ἐν Γεραροις

7 ἐπηρώτησαν δὲ οἱ ἄνδρες τοῦ τόπου περὶ Ρεβεκκας τῆς γυναικὸς αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπεν ἀδελφή μού ἐστιν ἐφοβήθη γὰρ εἰπεῖν ὅτι γυνή μού ἐστιν μήποτε ἀποκτείνωσιν αὐτὸν οἱ ἄνδρες τοῦ τόπου περὶ Ρεβεκκας ὅτι ὡραία τῇ ὄψει ἦν

8 ἐγένετο δὲ πολυχρόνιος ἐκεῖ παρακύψας δὲ Αβιμελεχ ὁ βασιλεὺς Γεραρων διὰ τῆς θυρίδος εἶδεν τὸν Ισαακ παίζοντα μετὰ Ρεβεκκας τῆς γυναικὸς αὐτοῦ

9 ἐκάλεσεν δὲ Αβιμελεχ τὸν Ισαακ καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ἄρα γε γυνή σού ἐστιν τί ὅτι εἶπας ἀδελφή μού ἐστιν εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῷ Ισαακ εἶπα γάρ μήποτε ἀποθάνω δι᾽ αὐτήν

10 εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῷ Αβιμελεχ τί τοῦτο ἐποίησας ἡμῖν μικροῦ ἐκοιμήθη τις τοῦ γένους μου μετὰ τῆς γυναικός σου καὶ ἐπήγαγες ἐφ᾽ ἡμᾶς ἄγνοιαν

11 συνέταξεν δὲ Αβιμελεχ παντὶ τῷ λαῷ αὐτοῦ λέγων πᾶς ὁ ἁπτόμενος τοῦ ἀνθρώπου τούτου ἢ τῆς γυναικὸς αὐτοῦ θανάτου ἔνοχος ἔσται

12 ἔσπειρεν δὲ Ισαακ ἐν τῇ γῇ ἐκείνῃ καὶ εὗρεν ἐν τῷ ἐνιαυτῷ ἐκείνῳ ἑκατοστεύουσαν κριθήν εὐλόγησεν δὲ αὐτὸν κύριος

13 καὶ ὑψώθη ὁ ἄνθρωπος καὶ προβαίνων μείζων ἐγίνετο ἕως οὗ μέγας ἐγένετο σφόδρα

14 ἐγένετο δὲ αὐτῷ κτήνη προβάτων καὶ κτήνη βοῶν καὶ γεώργια πολλά ἐζήλωσαν δὲ αὐτὸν οἱ Φυλιστιιμ

15 καὶ πάντα τὰ φρέατα ἃ ὤρυξαν οἱ παῖδες τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ ἐν τῷ χρόνῳ τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ ἐνέφραξαν αὐτὰ οἱ Φυλιστιιμ καὶ ἔπλησαν αὐτὰ γῆς

16 εἶπεν δὲ Αβιμελεχ πρὸς Ισαακ ἄπελθε ἀφ᾽ ἡμῶν ὅτι δυνατώτερος ἡμῶν ἐγένου σφόδρα

17 καὶ ἀπῆλθεν ἐκεῖθεν Ισαακ καὶ κατέλυσεν ἐν τῇ φάραγγι Γεραρων καὶ κατῴκησεν ἐκεῖ

18 καὶ πάλιν Ισαακ ὤρυξεν τὰ φρέατα τοῦ ὕδατος ἃ ὤρυξαν οἱ παῖδες Αβρααμ τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐνέφραξαν αὐτὰ οἱ Φυλιστιιμ μετὰ τὸ ἀποθανεῖν Αβρααμ τὸν πατέρα αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐπωνόμασεν αὐτοῖς ὀνόματα κατὰ τὰ ὀνόματα ἃ ἐπωνόμασεν Αβρααμ ὁ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ

19 καὶ ὤρυξαν οἱ παῖδες Ισαακ ἐν τῇ φάραγγι Γεραρων καὶ εὗρον ἐκεῖ φρέαρ ὕδατος ζῶντος

20 καὶ ἐμαχέσαντο οἱ ποιμένες Γεραρων μετὰ τῶν ποιμένων Ισαακ φάσκοντες αὐτῶν εἶναι τὸ ὕδωρ καὶ ἐκάλεσεν τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ φρέατος Ἀδικία ἠδίκησαν γὰρ αὐτόν

21 ἀπάρας δὲ Ισαακ ἐκεῖθεν ὤρυξεν φρέαρ ἕτερον ἐκρίνοντο δὲ καὶ περὶ ἐκείνου καὶ ἐπωνόμασεν τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Ἐχθρία

22 ἀπάρας δὲ ἐκεῖθεν ὤρυξεν φρέαρ ἕτερον καὶ οὐκ ἐμαχέσαντο περὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐπωνόμασεν τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Εὐρυχωρία λέγων διότι νῦν ἐπλάτυνεν κύριος ἡμῖν καὶ ηὔξησεν ἡμᾶς ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς

23 ἀνέβη δὲ ἐκεῖθεν ἐπὶ τὸ φρέαρ τοῦ ὅρκου

24 καὶ ὤφθη αὐτῷ κύριος ἐν τῇ νυκτὶ ἐκείνῃ καὶ εἶπεν ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ θεὸς Αβρααμ τοῦ πατρός σου μὴ φοβοῦ μετὰ σοῦ γάρ εἰμι καὶ ηὐλόγηκά σε καὶ πληθυνῶ τὸ σπέρμα σου διὰ Αβρααμ τὸν πατέρα σου

25 καὶ ᾠκοδόμησεν ἐκεῖ θυσιαστήριον καὶ ἐπεκαλέσατο τὸ ὄνομα κυρίου καὶ ἔπηξεν ἐκεῖ τὴν σκηνὴν αὐτοῦ ὤρυξαν δὲ ἐκεῖ οἱ παῖδες Ισαακ φρέαρ

26 καὶ Αβιμελεχ ἐπορεύθη πρὸς αὐτὸν ἀπὸ Γεραρων καὶ Οχοζαθ ὁ νυμφαγωγὸς αὐτοῦ καὶ Φικολ ὁ ἀρχιστράτηγος τῆς δυνάμεως αὐτοῦ

27 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ισαακ ἵνα τί ἤλθατε πρός με ὑμεῖς δὲ ἐμισήσατέ με καὶ ἀπεστείλατέ με ἀφ᾽ ὑμῶν

28 καὶ εἶπαν ἰδόντες ἑωράκαμεν ὅτι ἦν κύριος μετὰ σοῦ καὶ εἴπαμεν γενέσθω ἀρὰ ἀνὰ μέσον ἡμῶν καὶ ἀνὰ μέσον σοῦ καὶ διαθησόμεθα μετὰ σοῦ διαθήκην

29 μὴ ποιήσειν μεθ᾽ ἡμῶν κακόν καθότι ἡμεῖς σε οὐκ ἐβδελυξάμεθα καὶ ὃν τρόπον ἐχρησάμεθά σοι καλῶς καὶ ἐξαπεστείλαμέν σε μετ᾽ εἰρήνης καὶ νῦν σὺ εὐλογητὸς ὑπὸ κυρίου

30 καὶ ἐποίησεν αὐτοῖς δοχήν καὶ ἔφαγον καὶ ἔπιον

31 καὶ ἀναστάντες τὸ πρωὶ ὤμοσαν ἄνθρωπος τῷ πλησίον αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐξαπέστειλεν αὐτοὺς Ισαακ καὶ ἀπῴχοντο ἀπ᾽ αὐτοῦ μετὰ σωτηρίας

32 ἐγένετο δὲ ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ καὶ παραγενόμενοι οἱ παῖδες Ισαακ ἀπήγγειλαν αὐτῷ περὶ τοῦ φρέατος οὗ ὤρυξαν καὶ εἶπαν οὐχ εὕρομεν ὕδωρ

33 καὶ ἐκάλεσεν αὐτὸ Ὅρκος διὰ τοῦτο ὄνομα τῇ πόλει Φρέαρ ὅρκου ἕως τῆς σήμερον ἡμέρας

34 ἦν δὲ Ησαυ ἐτῶν τεσσαράκοντα καὶ ἔλαβεν γυναῖκα Ιουδιν τὴν θυγατέρα Βεηρ τοῦ Χετταίου καὶ τὴν Βασεμμαθ θυγατέρα Αιλων τοῦ Ευαίου

35 καὶ ἦσαν ἐρίζουσαι τῷ Ισαακ καὶ τῇ Ρεβεκκα

‎1 ‏וַיְהִ֤י רָעָב֙ בָּאָ֔רֶץ מִלְּבַד֙ הָרָעָ֣ב הָרִאשׁ֔וֹן אֲשֶׁ֥ר הָיָ֖ה בִּימֵ֣י אַבְרָהָ֑ם וַיֵּ֧לֶךְ יִצְחָ֛ק אֶל־אֲבִימֶּ֥לֶךְ¹ מֶֽלֶךְ־פְּלִשְׁתִּ֖ים גְּרָֽרָה׃

‎2 ‏וַיֵּרָ֤א אֵלָיו֙ יְהוָ֔ה וַיֹּ֖אמֶר אַל־תֵּרֵ֣ד מִצְרָ֑יְמָה שְׁכֹ֣ן בָּאָ֔רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֖ר אֹמַ֥ר אֵלֶֽיךָ׃

‎3 ‏גּ֚וּר³ בָּאָ֣רֶץ הַזֹּ֔את וְאֶֽהְיֶ֥ה עִמְּךָ֖ וַאֲבָרְכֶ֑ךָּ כִּֽי־לְךָ֣ וּֽלְזַרְעֲךָ֗ אֶתֵּן֙ אֶת־כָּל־הָֽאֲרָצֹ֣ת הָאֵ֔ל וַהֲקִֽמֹתִי֙ אֶת־הַשְּׁבֻעָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר נִשְׁבַּ֖עְתִּי לְאַבְרָהָ֥ם אָבִֽיךָ׃

‎4 ‏וְהִרְבֵּיתִ֤י אֶֽת־זַרְעֲךָ֙ כְּכוֹכְבֵ֣י הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם וְנָתַתִּ֣י לְזַרְעֲךָ֔ אֵ֥ת כָּל־הָאֲרָצֹ֖ת הָאֵ֑ל וְהִתְבָּרֲכ֣וּ בְזַרְעֲךָ֔ כֹּ֖ל גּוֹיֵ֥י הָאָֽרֶץ׃

‎5 ‏עֵ֕קֶב אֲשֶׁר־שָׁמַ֥ע אַבְרָהָ֖ם בְּקֹלִ֑י וַיִּשְׁמֹר֙ מִשְׁמַרְתִּ֔י מִצְוֹתַ֖י חֻקּוֹתַ֥י וְתוֹרֹתָֽי׃

‎6 ‏וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב יִצְחָ֖ק בִּגְרָֽר׃

‎7 ‏וַֽיִּשְׁאֲל֞וּ אַנְשֵׁ֤י הַמָּקוֹם֙ לְאִשְׁתּ֔וֹ וַיֹּ֖אמֶר אֲחֹ֣תִי הִ֑וא כִּ֤י יָרֵא֙ לֵאמֹ֣ר אִשְׁתִּ֔י פֶּן־יַֽהַרְגֻ֜נִי אַנְשֵׁ֤י הַמָּקוֹם֙ עַל־רִבְקָ֔ה כִּֽי־טוֹבַ֥ת מַרְאֶ֖ה הִֽיא׃

‎8 ‏וַיְהִ֗י כִּ֣י אָֽרְכוּ־ל֥וֹ שָׁם֙ הַיָּמִ֔ים וַיַּשְׁקֵ֗ף אֲבִימֶ֙לֶךְ֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים בְּעַ֖ד הַֽחַלּ֑וֹן וַיַּ֗רְא וְהִנֵּ֤ה יִצְחָק֙ מְצַחֵ֔ק אֵ֖ת רִבְקָ֥ה אִשְׁתּֽוֹ׃

‎9 ‏וַיִּקְרָ֨א אֲבִימֶ֜לֶךְ לְיִצְחָ֗ק וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ אַ֣ךְ הִנֵּ֤ה אִשְׁתְּךָ֙ הִ֔וא וְאֵ֥יךְ אָמַ֖רְתָּ אֲחֹ֣תִי הִ֑וא וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלָיו֙ יִצְחָ֔ק כִּ֣י אָמַ֔רְתִּי פֶּן־אָמ֖וּת עָלֶֽיהָ׃

‎10 ‏וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֲבִימֶ֔לֶךְ מַה־זֹּ֖את עָשִׂ֣יתָ לָּ֑נוּ כִּ֠מְעַט שָׁכַ֞ב אַחַ֤ד הָעָם֙ אֶת־אִשְׁתֶּ֔ךָ וְהֵבֵאתָ֥ עָלֵ֖ינוּ אָשָֽׁם׃

‎11 ‏וַיְצַ֣ו אֲבִימֶ֔לֶךְ אֶת־כָּל־הָעָ֖ם לֵאמֹ֑ר הַנֹּגֵ֜עַ בָּאִ֥ישׁ הַזֶּ֛ה וּבְאִשְׁתּ֖וֹ מ֥וֹת יוּמָֽת׃

‎12 ‏וַיִּזְרַ֤ע יִצְחָק֙ בָּאָ֣רֶץ הַהִ֔וא וַיִּמְצָ֛א בַּשָּׁנָ֥ה הַהִ֖וא מֵאָ֣ה שְׁעָרִ֑ים וַֽיְבָרֲכֵ֖הוּ יְהוָֽה׃

‎13 ‏וַיִּגְדַּ֖ל הָאִ֑ישׁ וַיֵּ֤לֶךְ הָלוֹךְ֙ וְגָדֵ֔ל עַ֥ד כִּֽי־גָדַ֖ל מְאֹֽד׃

‎14 ‏וַֽיְהִי־ל֤וֹ מִקְנֵה־צֹאן֙ וּמִקְנֵ֣ה בָקָ֔ר וַעֲבֻדָּ֖ה רַבָּ֑ה וַיְקַנְא֥וּ אֹת֖וֹ פְּלִשְׁתִּֽים׃

‎15 ‏וְכָל־הַבְּאֵרֹ֗ת אֲשֶׁ֤ר חָֽפְרוּ֙ עַבְדֵ֣י אָבִ֔יו בִּימֵ֖י אַבְרָהָ֣ם אָבִ֑יו סִתְּמ֣וּם פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים וַיְמַלְא֖וּם עָפָֽר׃

‎16 ‏וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֲבִימֶ֖לֶךְ אֶל־יִצְחָ֑ק לֵ֚ךְ מֵֽעִמָּ֔נוּ כִּֽי־עָצַֽמְתָּ־מִמֶּ֖נּוּ³ מְאֹֽד׃

‎17 ‏וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ מִשָּׁ֖ם יִצְחָ֑ק וַיִּ֥חַן בְּנַֽחַל־גְּרָ֖ר וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב שָֽׁם׃

‎18 ‏וַיָּ֨שָׁב יִצְחָ֜ק וַיַּחְפֹּ֣ר׀ אֶת־בְּאֵרֹ֣ת הַמַּ֗יִם אֲשֶׁ֤ר חָֽפְרוּ֙ בִּימֵי֙ אַבְרָהָ֣ם אָבִ֔יו וַיְסַתְּמ֣וּם פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים אַחֲרֵ֖י מ֣וֹת אַבְרָהָ֑ם וַיִּקְרָ֤א לָהֶן֙ שֵׁמ֔וֹת כַּשֵּׁמֹ֕ת אֲשֶׁר־קָרָ֥א לָהֶ֖ן אָבִֽיו׃

‎19 ‏וַיַּחְפְּר֥וּ עַבְדֵֽי־יִצְחָ֖ק בַּנָּ֑חַל וַיִּ֨מְצְאוּ־שָׁ֔ם בְּאֵ֖ר מַ֥יִם חַיִּֽים׃

‎20 ‏וַיָּרִ֜יבוּ רֹעֵ֣י גְרָ֗ר עִם־רֹעֵ֥י יִצְחָ֛ק לֵאמֹ֖ר לָ֣נוּ הַמָּ֑יִם וַיִּקְרָ֤א שֵֽׁם־הַבְּאֵר֙ עֵ֔שֶׂק כִּ֥י הִֽתְעַשְּׂק֖וּ עִמּֽוֹ׃

‎21 ‏וַֽיַּחְפְּרוּ֙ בְּאֵ֣ר אַחֶ֔רֶת וַיָּרִ֖יבוּ גַּם־עָלֶ֑יהָ וַיִּקְרָ֥א שְׁמָ֖הּ שִׂטְנָֽה׃

‎22 ‏וַיַּעְתֵּ֣ק מִשָּׁ֗ם וַיַּחְפֹּר֙ בְּאֵ֣ר אַחֶ֔רֶת וְלֹ֥א רָב֖וּ עָלֶ֑יהָ וַיִּקְרָ֤א שְׁמָהּ֙ רְחֹב֔וֹת וַיֹּ֗אמֶר כִּֽי־עַתָּ֞ה הִרְחִ֧יב יְהוָ֛ה לָ֖נוּ וּפָרִ֥ינוּ בָאָֽרֶץ׃

‎23 ‏וַיַּ֥עַל מִשָּׁ֖ם בְּאֵ֥ר שָֽׁבַע׃

‎24 ‏וַיֵּרָ֨א אֵלָ֤יו יְהוָה֙ בַּלַּ֣יְלָה הַה֔וּא וַיֹּ֕אמֶר אָנֹכִ֕י אֱלֹהֵ֖י אַבְרָהָ֣ם אָבִ֑יךָ אַל־תִּירָא֙ כִּֽי־אִתְּךָ֣ אָנֹ֔כִי וּבֵֽרַכְתִּ֙יךָ֙ וְהִרְבֵּיתִ֣י אֶֽת־זַרְעֲךָ֔ בַּעֲב֖וּר אַבְרָהָ֥ם עַבְדִּֽי׃

‎25 ‏וַיִּ֧בֶן שָׁ֣ם מִזְבֵּ֗חַ וַיִּקְרָא֙ בְּשֵׁ֣ם יְהוָ֔ה וַיֶּט־שָׁ֖ם אָהֳל֑וֹ וַיִּכְרוּ־שָׁ֥ם עַבְדֵי־יִצְחָ֖ק בְּאֵֽר׃

‎26 ‏וַאֲבִימֶ֕לֶךְ הָלַ֥ךְ אֵלָ֖יו מִגְּרָ֑ר וַאֲחֻזַּת֙ מֵֽרֵעֵ֔הוּ וּפִיכֹ֖ל שַׂר־צְבָאֽוֹ׃

‎27 ‏וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֲלֵהֶם֙ יִצְחָ֔ק מַדּ֖וּעַ בָּאתֶ֣ם אֵלָ֑י וְאַתֶּם֙ שְׂנֵאתֶ֣ם אֹתִ֔י וַתְּשַׁלְּח֖וּנִי מֵאִתְּכֶֽם׃

‎28 ‏וַיֹּאמְר֗וּ רָא֣וֹ רָאִינוּ֮ כִּֽי־הָיָ֣ה יְהוָ֣ה׀ עִמָּךְ֒ וַנֹּ֗אמֶר תְּהִ֨י נָ֥א אָלָ֛ה בֵּינוֹתֵ֖ינוּ בֵּינֵ֣ינוּ וּבֵינֶ֑ךָ וְנִכְרְתָ֥ה בְרִ֖ית עִמָּֽךְ׃

‎29 ‏אִם־תַּעֲשֵׂ֨ה¹ עִמָּ֜נוּ רָעָ֗ה כַּאֲשֶׁר֙ לֹ֣א נְגַֽעֲנ֔וּךָ וְכַאֲשֶׁ֨ר עָשִׂ֤ינוּ עִמְּךָ֙ רַק־ט֔וֹב וַנְּשַׁלֵּֽחֲךָ֖ בְּשָׁל֑וֹם אַתָּ֥ה עַתָּ֖ה בְּר֥וּךְ יְהוָֽה׃

‎30 ‏וַיַּ֤עַשׂ לָהֶם֙ מִשְׁתֶּ֔ה וַיֹּאכְל֖וּ וַיִּשְׁתּֽוּ׃

‎31 ‏וַיַּשְׁכִּ֣ימוּ בַבֹּ֔קֶר וַיִּשָּׁבְע֖וּ אִ֣ישׁ לְאָחִ֑יו וַיְשַׁלְּחֵ֣ם יִצְחָ֔ק וַיֵּלְכ֥וּ מֵאִתּ֖וֹ בְּשָׁלֽוֹם׃

‎32 ‏וַיְהִ֣י׀ בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֗וּא וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙ עַבְדֵ֣י יִצְחָ֔ק וַיַּגִּ֣דוּ ל֔וֹ עַל־אֹד֥וֹת הַבְּאֵ֖ר אֲשֶׁ֣ר חָפָ֑רוּ וַיֹּ֥אמְרוּ ל֖וֹ מָצָ֥אנוּ מָֽיִם׃

‎33 ‏וַיִּקְרָ֥א אֹתָ֖הּ שִׁבְעָ֑ה עַל־כֵּ֤ן שֵׁם־הָעִיר֙ בְּאֵ֣ר שֶׁ֔בַע עַ֖ד הַיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה׃ ס

‎34 ‏וַיְהִ֤י עֵשָׂו֙ בֶּן־אַרְבָּעִ֣ים שָׁנָ֔ה וַיִּקַּ֤ח אִשָּׁה֙ אֶת־יְהוּדִ֔ית בַּת־בְּאֵרִ֖י הַֽחִתִּ֑י וְאֶת־בָּ֣שְׂמַ֔ת בַּת־אֵילֹ֖ן הַֽחִתִּֽי׃

‎35 ‏וַתִּהְיֶ֖יןָ מֹ֣רַת ר֑וּחַ לְיִצְחָ֖ק וּלְרִבְקָֽה׃ ס

Vul

1 Orta autem fame super terram post eam sterilitatem, quæ acciderat in diebus Abraham, abiit Isaac ad Abimelech regem Palæstinorum in Gerara.

2 Apparuitque ei Dominus, et ait: Ne descendas in Ægyptum, sed quiesce in terra quam dixero tibi,

3 et peregrinare in ea: eroque tecum, et benedicam tibi: tibi enim et semini tuo dabo universas regiones has, complens juramentum quod spopondi Abraham patri tuo.

4 Et multiplicabo semen tuum sicut stellas cæli: daboque posteris tuis universas regiones has: et benedicentur in semine tuo omnes gentes terræ,

5 eo quod obedierit Abraham voci meæ, et custodierit præcepta et mandata mea, et cæremonias legesque servaverit.

6 Mansit itaque Isaac in Geraris.

7 Qui cum interrogaretur a viris loci illius super uxore sua, respondit: Soror mea est: timuerat enim confiteri quod sibi esset sociata conjugio, reputans ne forte interficerent eum propter illius pulchritudinem.

8 Cumque pertransissent dies plurimi, et ibidem moraretur, prospiciens Abimelech rex Palæstinorum per fenestram, vidit eum jocantem cum Rebecca uxore sua.

9 Et accersito eo, ait: Perspicuum est quod uxor tua sit: cur mentitus es eam sororem tuam esse? Respondit: Timui ne morerer propter eam.

10 Dixitque Abimelech: Quare imposuisti nobis? potuit coire quispiam de populo cum uxore tua, et induxeras super nos grande peccatum. Præcepitque omni populo, dicens:

11 Qui tetigerit hominis hujus uxorem, morte morietur.

12 Sevit autem Isaac in terra illa, et invenit in ipso anno centuplum: benedixitque ei Dominus.

13 Et locupletatus est homo, et ibat proficiens atque succrescens, donec magnus vehementer effectus est:

14 habuit quoque possessiones ovium et armentorum, et familiæ plurimum. Ob hoc invidentes ei Palæstini,

15 omnes puteos, quos foderant servi patris illius Abraham, illo tempore obstruxerunt, implentes humo:

16 in tantum, ut ipse Abimelech diceret ad Isaac: Recede a nobis, quoniam potentior nobis factus es valde.

17 Et ille discedens, ut veniret ad torrentem Geraræ, habitaretque ibi,

18 rursum fodit alios puteos, quos foderant servi patris sui Abraham, et quos, illo mortuo, olim obstruxerant Philisthiim: appellavitque eos eisdem nominibus quibus ante pater vocaverat.

19 Foderuntque in torrente, et repererunt aquam vivam.

20 Sed et ibi jurgium fuit pastorum Geraræ adversus pastores Isaac, dicentium: Nostra est aqua, quam ob rem nomen putei ex eo, quod acciderat, vocavit Calumniam.

21 Foderunt autem et alium: et pro illo quoque rixati sunt, appellavitque eum Inimicitias.

22 Profectus inde fodit alium puteum, pro quo non contenderunt: itaque vocavit nomen ejus Latitudo, dicens: Nunc dilatavit nos Dominus, et fecit crescere super terram.

23 Ascendit autem ex illo loco in Bersabee,

24 ubi apparuit ei Dominus in ipsa nocte, dicens: Ego sum Deus Abraham patris tui: noli timere, quia ego tecum sum: benedicam tibi, et multiplicabo semen tuum propter servum meum Abraham.

25 Itaque ædificavit ibi altare: et invocato nomine Domini, extendit tabernaculum, præcepitque servis suis ut foderunt puteum.

26 Ad quem locum cum venissent de Geraris Abimelech, et Ochozath amicus illius, et Phicol dux militum,

27 locutus est eis Isaac: Quid venistis ad me, hominem quem odistis, et expulistis a vobis?

28 Qui responderunt: Vidimus tecum esse Dominum, et idcirco nos diximus: Sit juramentum inter nos, et ineamus fœdus,

29 ut non facias nobis quidquam mali, sicut et nos nihil tuorum attigimus, nec fecimus quod te læderet: sed cum pace dimisimus auctum benedictione Domini.

30 Fecit ergo eis convivium, et post cibum et potum

31 surgentes mane, juraverunt sibi mutuo: dimisitque eos Isaac pacifice in locum suum.

32 Ecce autem venerunt in ipso die servi Isaac annuntiantes ei de puteo, quem foderant, atque dicentes: Invenimus aquam.

33 Unde appellavit eum Abundantiam: et nomen urbi impositum est Bersabee, usque in præsentem diem.

34 Esau vero quadragenarius duxit uxores, Judith filiam Beeri Hethæi, et Basemath filiam Elon ejusdem loci:

35 quæ ambæ offenderant animum Isaac et Rebeccæ.
