1  And the famine⁷⁴⁵⁸ was sore³⁵¹⁵ in the land.⁷⁷⁶

2  And it came to pass,¹⁹⁶¹ when⁸³⁴ they had eaten up^{3615 398 853} the corn⁷⁶⁶⁸ which⁸³⁴ they had brought⁹³⁵ out of Egypt,^{4480 4714} their father¹ said⁵⁵⁹ unto⁴¹³ them, Go again,⁷⁷²⁵ buy⁷⁶⁶⁶ us a little⁴⁵⁹² food.⁴⁰⁰

3  And Judah³⁰⁶³ spoke⁵⁵⁹ unto⁴¹³ him, saying,⁵⁵⁹ The man³⁷⁶ did solemnly protest^{5749 5749} unto us, saying,⁵⁵⁹ Ye shall not³⁸⁰⁸ see⁷²⁰⁰ my face,⁶⁴⁴⁰ except¹¹¹⁵ your brother²⁵¹ be with⁸⁵⁴ you.

4  If⁵¹⁸ thou wilt³⁴²⁶ send^{7971 853} our brother²⁵¹ with⁸⁵⁴ us, we will go down³³⁸¹ and buy⁷⁶⁶⁶ thee food:⁴⁰⁰

5  But if⁵¹⁸ thou wilt not³⁶⁹ send⁷⁹⁷¹ him, we will not³⁸⁰⁸ go down:³³⁸¹ for³⁵⁸⁸ the man³⁷⁶ said⁵⁵⁹ unto⁴¹³ us, Ye shall not³⁸⁰⁸ see⁷²⁰⁰ my face,⁶⁴⁴⁰ except¹¹¹⁵ your brother²⁵¹ be with⁸⁵⁴ you.

6  And Israel³⁴⁷⁸ said,⁵⁵⁹ Wherefore⁴¹⁰⁰ dealt ye so ill⁷⁴⁸⁹ with me, as to tell⁵⁰⁴⁶ the man³⁷⁶ whether ye had yet⁵⁷⁵⁰ a brother?²⁵¹

7  And they said,⁵⁵⁹ The man³⁷⁶ asked us straitly^{7592 7592} of our state, and of our kindred,⁴¹³⁸ saying,⁵⁵⁹ Is your father¹ yet⁵⁷⁵⁰ alive?²⁴¹⁶ have³⁴²⁶ ye another brother?²⁵¹ and we told⁵⁰⁴⁶ him according to⁵⁹²¹ the tenor⁶³¹⁰ of these⁴²⁸ words:¹⁶⁹⁷ could we certainly know^{3045 3045} that³⁵⁸⁸ he would say,⁵⁵⁹ Bring your brother down?^{3381 853 251}

8  And Judah³⁰⁶³ said⁵⁵⁹ unto⁴¹³ Israel³⁴⁷⁸ his father,¹ Send⁷⁹⁷¹ the lad⁵²⁸⁸ with⁸⁵⁴ me, and we will arise⁶⁹⁶⁵ and go;¹⁹⁸⁰ that we may live,²⁴²¹ and not³⁸⁰⁸ die,⁴¹⁹¹ both¹⁵⁷¹ we,⁵⁸⁷ and¹⁵⁷¹ thou,⁸⁵⁹ and also¹⁵⁷¹ our little ones.²⁹⁴⁵

9  I⁵⁹⁵ will be surety⁶¹⁴⁸ for him; of my hand^{4480 3027} shalt thou require¹²⁴⁵ him: if⁵¹⁸ I bring⁹³⁵ him not³⁸⁰⁸ unto⁴¹³ thee, and set³³²² him before⁶⁴⁴⁰ thee, then let me bear the blame²³⁹⁸ forever:^{3605 3117}

10  For³⁵⁸⁸ except³⁸⁸⁴ we had lingered,⁴¹⁰² surely³⁵⁸⁸ now⁶²⁵⁸ we had returned⁷⁷²⁵ this²⁰⁸⁸ second time.⁶⁴⁷¹

11  And their father¹ Israel³⁴⁷⁸ said⁵⁵⁹ unto⁴¹³ them, If⁵¹⁸ it must be so³⁶⁵¹ now,⁶⁴⁵ do⁶²¹³ this;²⁰⁶³ take³⁹⁴⁷ of the best fruits^{4480 2173} in the land⁷⁷⁶ in your vessels,³⁶²⁷ and carry down³³⁸¹ the man³⁷⁶ a present,⁴⁵⁰³ a little⁴⁵⁹² balm,⁶⁸⁷⁵ and a little⁴⁵⁹² honey,¹⁷⁰⁶ spices,⁵²¹⁹ and myrrh,³⁹¹⁰ nuts,⁹⁹² and almonds:⁸²⁴⁷

12  And take³⁹⁴⁷ double⁴⁹³² money³⁷⁰¹ in your hand;³⁰²⁷ and the money³⁷⁰¹ that was brought again⁷⁷²⁵ in the mouth⁶³¹⁰ of your sacks,⁵⁷² carry it again⁷⁷²⁵ in your hand;³⁰²⁷ peradventure¹⁹⁴ it¹⁹³¹ was an oversight:⁴⁸⁷⁰

13  Take³⁹⁴⁷ also your brother,²⁵¹ and arise,⁶⁹⁶⁵ go again⁷⁷²⁵ unto⁴¹³ the man:³⁷⁶

14  And God⁴¹⁰ Almighty⁷⁷⁰⁶ give⁵⁴¹⁴ you mercy⁷³⁵⁶ before⁶⁴⁴⁰ the man,³⁷⁶ that he may send away^{7971 853} your other³¹² brother,²⁵¹ and Benjamin.¹¹⁴⁴ If⁸³⁴ I⁵⁸⁹ be bereaved⁷⁹²¹ of my children, I am bereaved.⁷⁹²¹

15  And the men³⁷⁶ took^{3947 853} that²⁰⁶³ present,⁴⁵⁰³ and they took³⁹⁴⁷ double⁴⁹³² money³⁷⁰¹ in their hand,³⁰²⁷ and Benjamin;¹¹⁴⁴ and rose up,⁶⁹⁶⁵ and went down³³⁸¹ to Egypt,⁴⁷¹⁴ and stood⁵⁹⁷⁵ before⁶⁴⁴⁰ Joseph.³¹³⁰

16  And when Joseph³¹³⁰ saw^{7200 853} Benjamin¹¹⁴⁴ with⁸⁵⁴ them, he said⁵⁵⁹ to the ruler of^{834 5921} his house,¹⁰⁰⁴ Bring^{935 853} these men³⁷⁶ home,¹⁰⁰⁴ and slay,^{2873 2874} and make ready;³⁵⁵⁹ for³⁵⁸⁸ these men³⁷⁶ shall dine³⁹⁸ with⁸⁵⁴ me at noon.⁶⁶⁷²

17  And the man³⁷⁶ did⁶²¹³ as⁸³⁴ Joseph³¹³⁰ bade;⁵⁵⁹ and the man³⁷⁶ brought^{935 853} the men³⁷⁶ into Joseph's³¹³⁰ house.¹⁰⁰⁴

18  And the men³⁷⁶ were afraid,³³⁷² because³⁵⁸⁸ they were brought⁹³⁵ into Joseph's³¹³⁰ house;¹⁰⁰⁴ and they said,⁵⁵⁹ Because of^{5921 1697} the money³⁷⁰¹ that was returned⁷⁷²⁵ in our sacks⁵⁷² at the first time⁸⁴⁶² are we⁵⁸⁷ brought in;⁹³⁵ that he may seek occasion¹⁵⁵⁶ against⁵⁹²¹ us, and fall⁵³⁰⁷ upon⁵⁹²¹ us, and take³⁹⁴⁷ us for bondmen,⁵⁶⁵⁰ and our asses.²⁵⁴³

19  And they came near⁵⁰⁶⁶ to⁴¹³ the steward^{376 834 5921} of Joseph's³¹³⁰ house,¹⁰⁰⁴ and they communed¹⁶⁹⁶ with⁴¹³ him at the door⁶⁶⁰⁷ of the house,¹⁰⁰⁴

20  And said,⁵⁵⁹ O⁹⁹⁴ sir,¹¹³ we came indeed down^{3381 3381} at the first time⁸⁴⁶² to buy⁷⁶⁶⁶ food:⁴⁰⁰

21  And it came to pass,¹⁹⁶¹ when³⁵⁸⁸ we came⁹³⁵ to⁴¹³ the inn,⁴⁴¹¹ that we opened^{6605 853} our sacks,⁵⁷² and, behold,²⁰⁰⁹ every man's³⁷⁶ money³⁷⁰¹ was in the mouth⁶³¹⁰ of his sack,⁵⁷² our money³⁷⁰¹ in full weight:⁴⁹⁴⁸ and we have brought it again^{7725 853} in our hand.³⁰²⁷

22  And other³¹² money³⁷⁰¹ have we brought down³³⁸¹ in our hands³⁰²⁷ to buy⁷⁶⁶⁶ food:⁴⁰⁰ we cannot³⁸⁰⁸ tell³⁰⁴⁵ who⁴³¹⁰ put⁷⁷⁶⁰ our money³⁷⁰¹ in our sacks.⁵⁷²

23  And he said,⁵⁵⁹ Peace⁷⁹⁶⁵ be to you, fear³³⁷² not:⁴⁰⁸ your God,⁴³⁰ and the God⁴³⁰ of your father,¹ hath given⁵⁴¹⁴ you treasure⁴³⁰¹ in your sacks:⁵⁷² I had⁹³⁵ your money.³⁷⁰¹ And he brought Simeon out^{3318 853 8095} unto⁴¹³ them.

24  And the man³⁷⁶ brought^{935 853} the men³⁷⁶ into Joseph's³¹³⁰ house,¹⁰⁰⁴ and gave⁵⁴¹⁴ them water,⁴³²⁵ and they washed⁷³⁶⁴ their feet;⁷²⁷² and he gave⁵⁴¹⁴ their asses²⁵⁴³ provender.⁴⁵⁵⁴

25  And they made ready^{3559 853} the present⁴⁵⁰³ against⁵⁷⁰⁴ Joseph³¹³⁰ came⁹³⁵ at noon:⁶⁶⁷² for³⁵⁸⁸ they heard⁸⁰⁸⁵ that³⁵⁸⁸ they should eat³⁹⁸ bread³⁸⁹⁹ there.⁸⁰³³

26  And when Joseph³¹³⁰ came⁹³⁵ home,¹⁰⁰⁴ they brought⁹³⁵ him ⁸⁵³ the present⁴⁵⁰³ which⁸³⁴ was in their hand³⁰²⁷ into the house,¹⁰⁰⁴ and bowed themselves⁷⁸¹² to him to the earth.⁷⁷⁶

27  And he asked⁷⁵⁹² them of their welfare,⁷⁹⁶⁵ and said,⁵⁵⁹ Is your father¹ well,⁷⁹⁶⁵ the old man²²⁰⁵ of whom⁸³⁴ ye spoke?⁵⁵⁹ Is he yet⁵⁷⁵⁰ alive?²⁴¹⁶

28  And they answered,⁵⁵⁹ Thy servant⁵⁶⁵⁰ our father¹ is in good health,⁷⁹⁶⁵ he is yet⁵⁷⁵⁰ alive.²⁴¹⁶ And they bowed down their heads,⁶⁹¹⁵ and made obeisance.⁷⁸¹²

29  And he lifted up⁵³⁷⁵ his eyes,⁵⁸⁶⁹ and saw⁷²⁰⁰ his brother^{251 853} Benjamin,¹¹⁴⁴ his mother's⁵¹⁷ son,¹¹²¹ and said,⁵⁵⁹ Is this²⁰⁸⁸ your younger⁶⁹⁹⁶ brother,²⁵¹ of whom⁸³⁴ ye spoke⁵⁵⁹ unto⁴¹³ me? And he said,⁵⁵⁹ God⁴³⁰ be gracious²⁶⁰³ unto thee, my son.¹¹²¹

30  And Joseph³¹³⁰ made haste;⁴¹¹⁶ for³⁵⁸⁸ his bowels⁷³⁵⁶ did yearn³⁶⁴⁸ upon⁴¹³ his brother:²⁵¹ and he sought¹²⁴⁵ where to weep;¹⁰⁵⁸ and he entered into⁹³⁵ his chamber,²³¹⁵ and wept¹⁰⁵⁸ there.⁸⁰³³

31  And he washed⁷³⁶⁴ his face,⁶⁴⁴⁰ and went out,³³¹⁸ and refrained himself,⁶⁶² and said,⁵⁵⁹ Set on⁷⁷⁶⁰ bread.³⁸⁹⁹

32  And they set on⁷⁷⁶⁰ for him by himself,⁹⁰⁵ and for them by themselves,⁹⁰⁵ and for the Egyptians,⁴⁷¹³ which did eat³⁹⁸ with⁸⁵⁴ him, by themselves:⁹⁰⁵ because³⁵⁸⁸ the Egyptians⁴⁷¹³ might³²⁰¹ not³⁸⁰⁸ eat³⁹⁸ bread³⁸⁹⁹ with⁸⁵⁴ the Hebrews;⁵⁶⁸⁰ for³⁵⁸⁸ that¹⁹³¹ is an abomination⁸⁴⁴¹ unto the Egyptians.⁴⁷¹⁴

33  And they sat³⁴²⁷ before⁶⁴⁴⁰ him, the firstborn¹⁰⁶⁰ according to his birthright,¹⁰⁶² and the youngest⁶⁸¹⁰ according to his youth:⁶⁸¹² and the men³⁷⁶ marveled⁸⁵³⁹ one³⁷⁶ at⁴¹³ another.⁷⁴⁵³

34  And he took⁵³⁷⁵ and sent messes⁴⁸⁶⁴ unto⁴¹³ them from^{4480 854} before⁶⁴⁴⁰ him: but Benjamin's¹¹⁴⁴ mess⁴⁸⁶⁴ was five times so much as^{7235 4480 4864 2568 3027} any³⁶⁰⁵ of theirs. And they drank,⁸³⁵⁴ and were merry⁷⁹³⁷ with⁵⁹⁷³ him.

1 ὁ δὲ λιμὸς ἐνίσχυσεν ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς

2 ἐγένετο δὲ ἡνίκα συνετέλεσαν καταφαγεῖν τὸν σῖτον ὃν ἤνεγκαν ἐξ Αἰγύπτου καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ὁ πατὴρ αὐτῶν πάλιν πορευθέντες πρίασθε ἡμῖν μικρὰ βρώματα

3 εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῷ Ιουδας λέγων διαμαρτυρίᾳ διαμεμαρτύρηται ἡμῖν ὁ ἄνθρωπος λέγων οὐκ ὄψεσθε τὸ πρόσωπόν μου ἐὰν μὴ ὁ ἀδελφὸς ὑμῶν ὁ νεώτερος μεθ᾽ ὑμῶν ᾖ

4 εἰ μὲν οὖν ἀποστέλλεις τὸν ἀδελφὸν ἡμῶν μεθ᾽ ἡμῶν καταβησόμεθα καὶ ἀγοράσωμέν σοι βρώματα

5 εἰ δὲ μὴ ἀποστέλλεις τὸν ἀδελφὸν ἡμῶν μεθ᾽ ἡμῶν οὐ πορευσόμεθα ὁ γὰρ ἄνθρωπος εἶπεν ἡμῖν λέγων οὐκ ὄψεσθέ μου τὸ πρόσωπον ἐὰν μὴ ὁ ἀδελφὸς ὑμῶν ὁ νεώτερος μεθ᾽ ὑμῶν ᾖ

6 εἶπεν δὲ Ισραηλ τί ἐκακοποιήσατέ με ἀναγγείλαντες τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ εἰ ἔστιν ὑμῖν ἀδελφός

7 οἱ δὲ εἶπαν ἐρωτῶν ἐπηρώτησεν ἡμᾶς ὁ ἄνθρωπος καὶ τὴν γενεὰν ἡμῶν λέγων εἰ ἔτι ὁ πατὴρ ὑμῶν ζῇ εἰ ἔστιν ὑμῖν ἀδελφός καὶ ἀπηγγείλαμεν αὐτῷ κατὰ τὴν ἐπερώτησιν ταύτην μὴ ᾔδειμεν εἰ ἐρεῖ ἡμῖν ἀγάγετε τὸν ἀδελφὸν ὑμῶν

8 εἶπεν δὲ Ιουδας πρὸς Ισραηλ τὸν πατέρα αὐτοῦ ἀπόστειλον τὸ παιδάριον μετ᾽ ἐμοῦ καὶ ἀναστάντες πορευσόμεθα ἵνα ζῶμεν καὶ μὴ ἀποθάνωμεν καὶ ἡμεῖς καὶ σὺ καὶ ἡ ἀποσκευὴ ἡμῶν

9 ἐγὼ δὲ ἐκδέχομαι αὐτόν ἐκ χειρός μου ζήτησον αὐτόν ἐὰν μὴ ἀγάγω αὐτὸν πρὸς σὲ καὶ στήσω αὐτὸν ἐναντίον σου ἡμαρτηκὼς ἔσομαι πρὸς σὲ πάσας τὰς ἡμέρας

10 εἰ μὴ γὰρ ἐβραδύναμεν ἤδη ἂν ὑπεστρέψαμεν δίς

11 εἶπεν δὲ αὐτοῖς Ισραηλ ὁ πατὴρ αὐτῶν εἰ οὕτως ἐστίν τοῦτο ποιήσατε λάβετε ἀπὸ τῶν καρπῶν τῆς γῆς ἐν τοῖς ἀγγείοις ὑμῶν καὶ καταγάγετε τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ δῶρα τῆς ῥητίνης καὶ τοῦ μέλιτος θυμίαμα καὶ στακτὴν καὶ τερέμινθον καὶ κάρυα

12 καὶ τὸ ἀργύριον δισσὸν λάβετε ἐν ταῖς χερσὶν ὑμῶν τὸ ἀργύριον τὸ ἀποστραφὲν ἐν τοῖς μαρσίπποις ὑμῶν ἀποστρέψατε μεθ᾽ ὑμῶν μήποτε ἀγνόημά ἐστιν

13 καὶ τὸν ἀδελφὸν ὑμῶν λάβετε καὶ ἀναστάντες κατάβητε πρὸς τὸν ἄνθρωπον

14 ὁ δὲ θεός μου δῴη ὑμῖν χάριν ἐναντίον τοῦ ἀνθρώπου καὶ ἀποστείλαι τὸν ἀδελφὸν ὑμῶν τὸν ἕνα καὶ τὸν Βενιαμιν ἐγὼ μὲν γάρ καθὰ ἠτέκνωμαι ἠτέκνωμαι

15 λαβόντες δὲ οἱ ἄνδρες τὰ δῶρα ταῦτα καὶ τὸ ἀργύριον διπλοῦν ἔλαβον ἐν ταῖς χερσὶν αὐτῶν καὶ τὸν Βενιαμιν καὶ ἀναστάντες κατέβησαν εἰς Αἴγυπτον καὶ ἔστησαν ἐναντίον Ιωσηφ

16 εἶδεν δὲ Ιωσηφ αὐτοὺς καὶ τὸν Βενιαμιν τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ τὸν ὁμομήτριον καὶ εἶπεν τῷ ἐπὶ τῆς οἰκίας αὐτοῦ εἰσάγαγε τοὺς ἀνθρώπους εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν καὶ σφάξον θύματα καὶ ἑτοίμασον μετ᾽ ἐμοῦ γὰρ φάγονται οἱ ἄνθρωποι ἄρτους τὴν μεσημβρίαν

17 ἐποίησεν δὲ ὁ ἄνθρωπος καθὰ εἶπεν Ιωσηφ καὶ εἰσήγαγεν τοὺς ἀνθρώπους εἰς τὸν οἶκον Ιωσηφ

18 ἰδόντες δὲ οἱ ἄνθρωποι ὅτι εἰσήχθησαν εἰς τὸν οἶκον Ιωσηφ εἶπαν διὰ τὸ ἀργύριον τὸ ἀποστραφὲν ἐν τοῖς μαρσίπποις ἡμῶν τὴν ἀρχὴν ἡμεῖς εἰσαγόμεθα τοῦ συκοφαντῆσαι ἡμᾶς καὶ ἐπιθέσθαι ἡμῖν τοῦ λαβεῖν ἡμᾶς εἰς παῖδας καὶ τοὺς ὄνους ἡμῶν

19 προσελθόντες δὲ πρὸς τὸν ἄνθρωπον τὸν ἐπὶ τοῦ οἴκου Ιωσηφ ἐλάλησαν αὐτῷ ἐν τῷ πυλῶνι τοῦ οἴκου

20 λέγοντες δεόμεθα κύριε κατέβημεν τὴν ἀρχὴν πρίασθαι βρώματα

21 ἐγένετο δὲ ἡνίκα ἤλθομεν εἰς τὸ καταλῦσαι καὶ ἠνοίξαμεν τοὺς μαρσίππους ἡμῶν καὶ τόδε τὸ ἀργύριον ἑκάστου ἐν τῷ μαρσίππῳ αὐτοῦ τὸ ἀργύριον ἡμῶν ἐν σταθμῷ ἀπεστρέψαμεν νῦν ἐν ταῖς χερσὶν ἡμῶν

22 καὶ ἀργύριον ἕτερον ἠνέγκαμεν μεθ᾽ ἑαυτῶν ἀγοράσαι βρώματα οὐκ οἴδαμεν τίς ἐνέβαλεν τὸ ἀργύριον εἰς τοὺς μαρσίππους ἡμῶν

23 εἶπεν δὲ αὐτοῖς ἵλεως ὑμῖν μὴ φοβεῖσθε ὁ θεὸς ὑμῶν καὶ ὁ θεὸς τῶν πατέρων ὑμῶν ἔδωκεν ὑμῖν θησαυροὺς ἐν τοῖς μαρσίπποις ὑμῶν τὸ δὲ ἀργύριον ὑμῶν εὐδοκιμοῦν ἀπέχω καὶ ἐξήγαγεν πρὸς αὐτοὺς τὸν Συμεων

24 καὶ ἤνεγκεν ὕδωρ νίψαι τοὺς πόδας αὐτῶν καὶ ἔδωκεν χορτάσματα τοῖς ὄνοις αὐτῶν

25 ἡτοίμασαν δὲ τὰ δῶρα ἕως τοῦ ἐλθεῖν Ιωσηφ μεσημβρίας ἤκουσαν γὰρ ὅτι ἐκεῖ μέλλει ἀριστᾶν

26 εἰσῆλθεν δὲ Ιωσηφ εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν καὶ προσήνεγκαν αὐτῷ τὰ δῶρα ἃ εἶχον ἐν ταῖς χερσὶν αὐτῶν εἰς τὸν οἶκον καὶ προσεκύνησαν αὐτῷ ἐπὶ πρόσωπον ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν

27 ἠρώτησεν δὲ αὐτούς πῶς ἔχετε καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς εἰ ὑγιαίνει ὁ πατὴρ ὑμῶν ὁ πρεσβύτερος ὃν εἴπατε ἔτι ζῇ

28 οἱ δὲ εἶπαν ὑγιαίνει ὁ παῖς σου ὁ πατὴρ ἡμῶν ἔτι ζῇ καὶ εἶπεν εὐλογητὸς ὁ ἄνθρωπος ἐκεῖνος τῷ θεῷ καὶ κύψαντες προσεκύνησαν αὐτῷ

29 ἀναβλέψας δὲ τοῖς ὀφθαλμοῖς Ιωσηφ εἶδεν Βενιαμιν τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ τὸν ὁμομήτριον καὶ εἶπεν οὗτος ὁ ἀδελφὸς ὑμῶν ὁ νεώτερος ὃν εἴπατε πρός με ἀγαγεῖν καὶ εἶπεν ὁ θεὸς ἐλεήσαι σε τέκνον

30 ἐταράχθη δὲ Ιωσηφ συνεστρέφετο γὰρ τὰ ἔντερα αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τῷ ἀδελφῷ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐζήτει κλαῦσαι εἰσελθὼν δὲ εἰς τὸ ταμιεῖον ἔκλαυσεν ἐκεῖ

31 καὶ νιψάμενος τὸ πρόσωπον ἐξελθὼν ἐνεκρατεύσατο καὶ εἶπεν παράθετε ἄρτους

32 καὶ παρέθηκαν αὐτῷ μόνῳ καὶ αὐτοῖς καθ᾽ ἑαυτοὺς καὶ τοῖς Αἰγυπτίοις τοῖς συνδειπνοῦσιν μετ᾽ αὐτοῦ καθ᾽ ἑαυτούς οὐ γὰρ ἐδύναντο οἱ Αἰγύπτιοι συνεσθίειν μετὰ τῶν Εβραίων ἄρτους βδέλυγμα γάρ ἐστιν τοῖς Αἰγυπτίοις

33 ἐκάθισαν δὲ ἐναντίον αὐτοῦ ὁ πρωτότοκος κατὰ τὰ πρεσβεῖα αὐτοῦ καὶ ὁ νεώτερος κατὰ τὴν νεότητα αὐτοῦ ἐξίσταντο δὲ οἱ ἄνθρωποι ἕκαστος πρὸς τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ

34 ἦραν δὲ μερίδας παρ᾽ αὐτοῦ πρὸς αὐτούς ἐμεγαλύνθη δὲ ἡ μερὶς Βενιαμιν παρὰ τὰς μερίδας πάντων πενταπλασίως πρὸς τὰς ἐκείνων ἔπιον δὲ καὶ ἐμεθύσθησαν μετ᾽ αὐτοῦ

‎1 ‏וְהָרָעָ֖ב כָּבֵ֥ד בָּאָֽרֶץ׃

‎2 ‏וַיְהִ֗י כַּאֲשֶׁ֤ר כִּלּוּ֙ לֶאֱכֹ֣ל אֶת־הַשֶּׁ֔בֶר אֲשֶׁ֥ר הֵבִ֖יאוּ מִמִּצְרָ֑יִם וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם֙ אֲבִיהֶ֔ם שֻׁ֖בוּ שִׁבְרוּ־לָ֥נוּ מְעַט־אֹֽכֶל׃

‎3 ‏וַיֹּ֧אמֶר אֵלָ֛יו יְהוּדָ֖ה לֵאמֹ֑ר הָעֵ֣ד הֵעִד֩ בָּ֨נוּ הָאִ֤ישׁ לֵאמֹר֙ לֹֽא־תִרְא֣וּ פָנַ֔י בִּלְתִּ֖י אֲחִיכֶ֥ם אִתְּכֶֽם׃

‎4 ‏אִם־יֶשְׁךָ֛ מְשַׁלֵּ֥חַ אֶת־אָחִ֖ינוּ אִתָּ֑נוּ נֵרְדָ֕ה וְנִשְׁבְּרָ֥ה לְךָ֖ אֹֽכֶל׃

‎5 ‏וְאִם־אֵינְךָ֥ מְשַׁלֵּ֖חַ לֹ֣א נֵרֵ֑ד כִּֽי־הָאִ֞ישׁ אָמַ֤ר אֵלֵ֙ינוּ֙ לֹֽא־תִרְא֣וּ פָנַ֔י בִּלְתִּ֖י אֲחִיכֶ֥ם אִתְּכֶֽם׃

‎6 ‏וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לָמָ֥ה הֲרֵעֹתֶ֖ם לִ֑י לְהַגִּ֣יד לָאִ֔ישׁ הַע֥וֹד לָכֶ֖ם אָֽח׃

‎7 ‏וַיֹּאמְר֡וּ שָׁא֣וֹל שָֽׁאַל־הָ֠אִישׁ לָ֣נוּ וּלְמֽוֹלַדְתֵּ֜נוּ לֵאמֹ֗ר הַע֨וֹד אֲבִיכֶ֥ם חַי֙ הֲיֵ֣שׁ לָכֶ֣ם אָ֔ח וַנַ֨גֶּד־ל֔וֹ¹ עַל־פִּ֖י הַדְּבָרִ֣ים הָאֵ֑לֶּה הֲיָד֣וֹעַ נֵדַ֔ע כִּ֣י יֹאמַ֔ר הוֹרִ֖ידוּ אֶת־אֲחִיכֶֽם׃

‎8 ‏וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהוּדָ֜ה אֶל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֣ל אָבִ֗יו שִׁלְחָ֥ה הַנַּ֛עַר אִתִּ֖י וְנָק֣וּמָה וְנֵלֵ֑כָה וְנִֽחְיֶה֙ וְלֹ֣א נָמ֔וּת גַּם־אֲנַ֥חְנוּ גַם־אַתָּ֖ה גַּם־טַפֵּֽנוּ׃

‎9 ‏אָֽנֹכִי֙ אֶֽעֶרְבֶ֔נּוּ מִיָּדִ֖י תְּבַקְשֶׁ֑נּוּ אִם־לֹ֨א הֲבִיאֹתִ֤יו אֵלֶ֙יךָ֙ וְהִצַּגְתִּ֣יו לְפָנֶ֔יךָ וְחָטָ֥אתִֽי לְךָ֖ כָּל־הַיָּמִֽים׃

‎10 ‏כִּ֖י לוּלֵ֣א הִתְמַהְמָ֑הְנוּ כִּֽי־עַתָּ֥ה שַׁ֖בְנוּ זֶ֥ה פַעֲמָֽיִם׃

‎11 ‏וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֲלֵהֶ֜ם יִשְׂרָאֵ֣ל אֲבִיהֶ֗ם אִם־כֵּ֣ן׀ אֵפוֹא֮ זֹ֣את עֲשׂוּ֒ קְח֞וּ מִזִּמְרַ֤ת הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ בִּכְלֵיכֶ֔ם וְהוֹרִ֥ידוּ לָאִ֖ישׁ מִנְחָ֑ה מְעַ֤ט צֳרִי֙ וּמְעַ֣ט דְּבַ֔שׁ נְכֹ֣את וָלֹ֔ט בָּטְנִ֖ים וּשְׁקֵדִֽים׃

‎12 ‏וְכֶ֥סֶף מִשְׁנֶ֖ה קְח֣וּ בְיֶדְכֶ֑ם וְאֶת־הַכֶּ֜סֶף הַמּוּשָׁ֨ב בְּפִ֤י אַמְתְּחֹֽתֵיכֶם֙ תָּשִׁ֣יבוּ בְיֶדְכֶ֔ם אוּלַ֥י מִשְׁגֶּ֖ה הֽוּא׃

‎13 ‏וְאֶת־אֲחִיכֶ֖ם קָ֑חוּ וְק֖וּמוּ שׁ֥וּבוּ אֶל־הָאִֽישׁ׃

‎14 ‏וְאֵ֣ל שַׁדַּ֗י יִתֵּ֨ן לָכֶ֤ם רַחֲמִים֙ לִפְנֵ֣י הָאִ֔ישׁ וְשִׁלַּ֥ח לָכֶ֛ם אֶת־אֲחִיכֶ֥ם אַחֵ֖ר וְאֶת־בִּנְיָמִ֑ין וַאֲנִ֕י כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר שָׁכֹ֖לְתִּי שָׁכָֽלְתִּי׃

‎15 ‏וַיִּקְח֤וּ הָֽאֲנָשִׁים֙ אֶת־הַמִּנְחָ֣ה הַזֹּ֔את וּמִשְׁנֶה־כֶּ֛סֶף לָקְח֥וּ בְיָדָ֖ם וְאֶת־בִּנְיָמִ֑ן וַיָּקֻ֙מוּ֙ וַיֵּרְד֣וּ מִצְרַ֔יִם וַיַּֽעַמְד֖וּ לִפְנֵ֥י יוֹסֵֽף׃

‎16 ‏וַיַּ֨רְא יוֹסֵ֣ף אִתָּם֮ אֶת־בִּנְיָמִין֒ וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ לַֽאֲשֶׁ֣ר עַל־בֵּית֔וֹ הָבֵ֥א אֶת־הָאֲנָשִׁ֖ים הַבָּ֑יְתָה וּטְבֹ֤חַ טֶ֙בַח֙ וְהָכֵ֔ן כִּ֥י אִתִּ֛י יֹאכְל֥וּ הָאֲנָשִׁ֖ים בַּֽצָּהֳרָֽיִם׃

‎17 ‏וַיַּ֣עַשׂ הָאִ֔ישׁ כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֖ר אָמַ֣ר יוֹסֵ֑ף וַיָּבֵ֥א הָאִ֛ישׁ אֶת־הָאֲנָשִׁ֖ים בֵּ֥יתָה יוֹסֵֽף׃

‎18 ‏וַיִּֽירְא֣וּ הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֗ים כִּ֣י הֽוּבְאוּ֮ בֵּ֣ית יוֹסֵף֒ וַיֹּאמְר֗וּ עַל־דְּבַ֤ר הַכֶּ֙סֶף֙ הַשָּׁ֤ב בְּאַמְתְּחֹתֵ֙ינוּ֙ בַּתְּחִלָּ֔ה אֲנַ֖חְנוּ מֽוּבָאִ֑ים לְהִתְגֹּלֵ֤ל עָלֵ֙ינוּ֙ וּלְהִתְנַפֵּ֣ל עָלֵ֔ינוּ וְלָקַ֧חַת אֹתָ֛נוּ לַעֲבָדִ֖ים וְאֶת־חֲמֹרֵֽינוּ׃

‎19 ‏וַֽיִּגְּשׁוּ֙ אֶל־הָאִ֔ישׁ אֲשֶׁ֖ר עַל־בֵּ֣ית יוֹסֵ֑ף וַיְדַבְּר֥וּ אֵלָ֖יו פֶּ֥תַח הַבָּֽיִת׃

‎20 ‏וַיֹּאמְר֖וּ בִּ֣י אֲדֹנִ֑י יָרֹ֥ד יָרַ֛דְנוּ בַּתְּחִלָּ֖ה לִשְׁבָּר־אֹֽכֶל׃

‎21 ‏וַֽיְהִ֞י כִּי־בָ֣אנוּ אֶל־הַמָּל֗וֹן וַֽנִּפְתְּחָה֙ אֶת־אַמְתְּחֹתֵ֔ינוּ וְהִנֵּ֤ה כֶֽסֶף־אִישׁ֙ בְּפִ֣י אַמְתַּחְתּ֔וֹ כַּסְפֵּ֖נוּ בְּמִשְׁקָל֑וֹ וַנָּ֥שֶׁב אֹת֖וֹ בְּיָדֵֽנוּ׃

‎22 ‏וְכֶ֧סֶף אַחֵ֛ר הוֹרַ֥דְנוּ בְיָדֵ֖נוּ לִשְׁבָּר־אֹ֑כֶל לֹ֣א יָדַ֔עְנוּ מִי־שָׂ֥ם כַּסְפֵּ֖נוּ בְּאַמְתְּחֹתֵֽינוּ׃

‎23 ‏וַיֹּאמֶר֩ שָׁל֨וֹם לָכֶ֜ם אַל־תִּירָ֗אוּ אֱלֹ֨הֵיכֶ֜ם וֵֽאלֹהֵ֤י אֲבִיכֶם֙ נָתַ֨ן לָכֶ֤ם מַטְמוֹן֙ בְּאַמְתְּחֹ֣תֵיכֶ֔ם כַּסְפְּכֶ֖ם בָּ֣א אֵלָ֑י וַיּוֹצֵ֥א אֲלֵהֶ֖ם אֶת־שִׁמְעֽוֹן׃

‎24 ‏וַיָּבֵ֥א הָאִ֛ישׁ אֶת־הָאֲנָשִׁ֖ים בֵּ֣יתָה יוֹסֵ֑ף וַיִּתֶּן־מַ֙יִם֙ וַיִּרְחֲצ֣וּ רַגְלֵיהֶ֔ם וַיִּתֵּ֥ן מִסְפּ֖וֹא לַחֲמֹֽרֵיהֶֽם׃

‎25 ‏וַיָּכִ֙ינוּ֙ אֶת־הַמִּנְחָ֔ה עַד־בּ֥וֹא יוֹסֵ֖ף בַּֽצָּהֳרָ֑יִם כִּ֣י שָֽׁמְע֔וּ כִּי־שָׁ֖ם יֹ֥אכְלוּ לָֽחֶם׃

‎26 ‏וַיָּבֹ֤א יוֹסֵף֙ הַבַּ֔יְתָה וַיָּבִ֥יאּוּ ל֛וֹ אֶת־הַמִּנְחָ֥ה אֲשֶׁר־בְּיָדָ֖ם הַבָּ֑יְתָה וַיִּשְׁתַּחֲווּ־ל֖וֹ אָֽרְצָה׃

‎27 ‏וַיִּשְׁאַ֤ל לָהֶם֙ לְשָׁל֔וֹם וַיֹּ֗אמֶר הֲשָׁל֛וֹם אֲבִיכֶ֥ם הַזָּקֵ֖ן אֲשֶׁ֣ר אֲמַרְתֶּ֑ם הַעוֹדֶ֖נּוּ חָֽי׃

‎28 ‏וַיֹּאמְר֗וּ שָׁל֛וֹם לְעַבְדְּךָ֥ לְאָבִ֖ינוּ עוֹדֶ֣נּוּ חָ֑י וַֽיִּקְּד֖וּ וישתחו וַיִּֽשְׁתַּחֲוּֽוּ׃¹

‎29 ‏וַיִּשָּׂ֣א עֵינָ֗יו וַיַּ֞רְא אֶת־בִּנְיָמִ֣ין אָחִיו֮ בֶּן־אִמּוֹ֒ וַיֹּ֗אמֶר הֲזֶה֙ אֲחִיכֶ֣ם הַקָּטֹ֔ן אֲשֶׁ֥ר אֲמַרְתֶּ֖ם אֵלָ֑י וַיֹּאמַ֕ר אֱלֹהִ֥ים יָחְנְךָ֖ בְּנִֽי׃

‎30 ‏וַיְמַהֵ֣ר יוֹסֵ֗ף כִּֽי־נִכְמְר֤וּ רַחֲמָיו֙ אֶל־אָחִ֔יו וַיְבַקֵּ֖שׁ לִבְכּ֑וֹת וַיָּבֹ֥א הַחַ֖דְרָה וַיֵּ֥בְךְּ שָֽׁמָּה׃

‎31 ‏וַיִּרְחַ֥ץ פָּנָ֖יו וַיֵּצֵ֑א וַיִּ֨תְאַפַּ֔ק וַיֹּ֖אמֶר שִׂ֥ימוּ לָֽחֶם׃

‎32 ‏וַיָּשִׂ֥ימוּ ל֛וֹ לְבַדּ֖וֹ וְלָהֶ֣ם לְבַדָּ֑ם וְלַמִּצְרִ֞ים הָאֹכְלִ֤ים אִתּוֹ֙ לְבַדָּ֔ם כִּי֩ לֹ֨א יוּכְל֜וּן הַמִּצְרִ֗ים לֶאֱכֹ֤ל אֶת־הָֽעִבְרִים֙ לֶ֔חֶם כִּי־תוֹעֵבָ֥ה הִ֖וא לְמִצְרָֽיִם׃

‎33 ‏וַיֵּשְׁב֣וּ לְפָנָ֔יו הַבְּכֹר֙ כִּבְכֹ֣רָת֔וֹ וְהַצָּעִ֖יר כִּצְעִרָת֑וֹ וַיִּתְמְה֥וּ הָאֲנָשִׁ֖ים אִ֥ישׁ אֶל־רֵעֵֽהוּ׃

‎34 ‏וַיִּשָּׂ֨א מַשְׂאֹ֜ת מֵאֵ֣ת פָּנָיו֮ אֲלֵהֶם֒ וַתֵּ֜רֶב מַשְׂאַ֧ת בִּנְיָמִ֛ן מִמַּשְׂאֹ֥ת כֻּלָּ֖ם חָמֵ֣שׁ יָד֑וֹת וַיִּשְׁתּ֥וּ וַֽיִּשְׁכְּר֖וּ עִמּֽוֹ׃

Vul

1 Interim fames omnem terram vehementer premebat.

2 Consumptisque cibis quos ex Ægypto detulerant, dixit Jacob ad filios suos: Revertimini, et emite nobis pauxillum escarum.

3 Respondit Judas: Denuntiavit nobis vir ille sub attestatione jurisjurandi, dicens: Non videbitis faciem meam, nisi fratrem vestrum minimum adduxeritis vobiscum.

4 Si ergo vis eum mittere nobiscum, pergemus pariter, et ememus tibi necessaria:

5 sin autem non vis, non ibimus: vir enim, ut sæpe diximus, denuntiavit nobis, dicens: Non videbitis faciem meam absque fratre vestro minimo.

6 Dixit eis Israël: In meam hoc fecistis miseriam, ut indicaretis ei et alium habere vos fratrem.

7 At illi responderunt: Interrogavit nos homo per ordinem nostram progeniem: si pater viveret: si haberemus fratrem: et nos respondimus ei consequenter juxta id quod fuerat sciscitatus: numquid scire poteramus quod dicturus esset: Adducite fratrem vestrum vobiscum?

8 Judas quoque dixit patri suo: Mitte puerum mecum, ut proficiscamur, et possimus vivere: ne moriamur nos et parvuli nostri.

9 Ego suscipio puerum: de manu mea require illum: nisi reduxero, et reddidero eum tibi, ero peccati reus in te omni tempore.

10 Si non intercessisset dilatio, jam vice alter venissemus.

11 Igitur Israël pater eorum dixit ad eos: Si sic necesse est, facite quod vultis: sumite de optimis terræ fructibus in vasis vestris, et deferte viro munera, modicum resinæ, et mellis, et storacis, stactes, et terebinthi, et amygdalarum.

12 Pecuniam quoque duplicem ferte vobiscum: et illam, quam invenistis in sacculis, reportate, ne forte errore factum sit:

13 sed et fratrem vestrum tollite, et ite ad virum.

14 Deus autem meus omnipotens faciat vobis eum placabilem: et remittat vobiscum fratrem vestrum quem tenet, et hunc Benjamin: ego autem quasi orbatus absque liberis ero.

15 Tulerunt ergo viri munera, et pecuniam duplicem, et Benjamin: descenderuntque in Ægyptum, et steterunt coram Joseph.

16 Quos cum ille vidisset et Benjamin simul, præcepit dispensatori domus suæ, dicens: Introduc viros domum, et occide victimas, et instrue convivium: quoniam mecum sunt comesturi meridie.

17 Fecit ille quod sibi fuerat imperatum, et introduxit viros domum.

18 Ibique exterriti, dixerunt mutuo: Propter pecuniam, quam retulimus prius in saccis nostris, introducti sumus: ut devolvat in nos calumniam, et violenter subjiciat servituti et nos, et asinos nostros.

19 Quam ob rem in ipsis foribus accedentes ad dispensatorem domus,

20 locuti sunt: Oramus, domine, ut audias nos. Jam ante descendimus ut emeremus escas:

21 quibus emptis, cum venissemus ad diversorium, aperuimus saccos nostros, et invenimus pecuniam in ore saccorum: quam nunc eodem pondere reportavimus.

22 Sed et aliud attulimus argentum, ut emamus quæ nobis necessaria sunt: non est in nostra conscientia quis posuerit eam in marsupiis nostris.

23 At ille respondit: Pax vobiscum, nolite timere: Deus vester, et Deus patris vestri, dedit vobis thesauros in saccis vestris: nam pecuniam, quam dedistis mihi, probatam ego habeo. Eduxitque ad eos Simeon.

24 Et introductis domum, attulit aquam, et laverunt pedes suos, deditque pabulum asinis eorum.

25 Illi vero parabant munera, donec ingrederetur Joseph meridie: audierant enim quod ibi comesturi essent panem.

26 Igitur ingressus est Joseph domum suam, obtuleruntque ei munera, tenentes in manibus suis: et adoraverunt proni in terram.

27 At ille, clementer resalutatis eis, interrogavit eos, dicens: Salvusne est pater vester senex, de quo dixeratis mihi? adhuc vivit?

28 Qui responderunt: Sospes est servus tuus pater noster, adhuc vivit. Et incurvati, adoraverunt eum.

29 Attollens autem Joseph oculos, vidit Benjamin fratrem suum uterinum, et ait: Iste est frater vester parvulus, de quo dixeratis mihi? Et rursum: Deus, inquit, misereatur tui, fili mi.

30 Festinavitque, quia commota fuerant viscera ejus super fratre suo, et erumpebant lacrimæ: et introiens cubiculum flevit.

31 Rursumque lota facie egressus, continuit se, et ait: Ponite panes.

32 Quibus appositis, seorsum Joseph, et seorsum fratribus, Ægyptiis quoque qui vescebantur simul, seorsum (illicitum est enim Ægyptiis comedere cum Hebræis, et profanum putant hujuscemodi convivium)

33 sederunt coram eo, primogenitus juxta primogenita sua, et minimus juxta ætatem suam. Et mirabantur nimis,

34 sumptis partibus quas ab eo acceperant: majorque pars venit Benjamin, ita ut quinque partibus excederet. Biberuntque et inebriati sunt cum eo.
